A reentry program for South Dakota inmates is in need of more funding.
The Rapid City Reentry Program receives full funding through a federal “Second Chance Act” grant, which is administered by the state.
The program had a budget of more than $59,000 in 2011. This year, the program is working with less than $25,000 which must cover housing, employment and other services for released inmates.
Joe Castle, the program’s coordinator, told the Rapid City Council Wednesday that the program deserves more funding because it is doing well.
“The one year rate for 2010 recidivism releases was 25% and the target was 28%,” said Castle.
The Rapid City Reentry Program expects the recidivism rate to reduce by 50% by 2016.
